Abi Hudson is a budding pop princess, hailing from Bromley. She recently unveiled her debut single ‘Fragile Around You’, and it’s a slice of pure pop brilliance. It combines acoustic vibes with a catchy pop beat, as well as Abi’s powerful vocals. The track was co-written by Abi, and demonstrates maturity and wisdom well beyond her young years.
We recently caught up with Abi to talk about her debut single, performing, and what the future has in store for her.
Hi Abi! First off, when did you first realise that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I’ve wanted a to be a singer probably since I learned how to sing the alphabet, haha! I think I really decided that music was what I HAD to do a few years ago, when I started playing the guitar, writing songs and performing. I completely fell in love with it and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else from that point.
Congratulations on the release of your debut single ‘Fragile Around You’! For those who haven’t heard it yet, can you tell us a bit about the track?
It’s a pop track, with amazing production and a raw, live feel. The song is basically about the nature of relationships and the feeling of the helplessness that can sometimes come with them…
‘Fragile Around You’ was one of your first co-writes. What was the songwriting process like?
It was weird at first. When you’re writing with other people you have to let yourself be completely vulnerable and share all of your thoughts and feelings with them. It was a really amazing experience though.
The track was produced by Terry Ronald and Steve Anderson, whose credits include the legendary Kylie Minogue. What were they like to work with?
Completely amazing! I still find it surreal to have got to work with such incredibly talented and respected people on my very first single.
As well as a fantastic single, you’ve been working towards releasing your debut EP. What can we expect from it?
You can expect a sound that’s consistent with the single…there are a couple of up-tempo tracks and then this piano ballad that I co-wrote with the same guys as ‘Fragile Around You’. It is such a beautiful track that I’m really looking forward to sharing!
Considering your young age, how do you cope with the pressures of the music industry?
So far I’m really enjoying working in the music industry. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with some really amazing people. Any pressure is worth it to be able to do what I love every day.
You’ve been compared to Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, but who inspires your sound?
As well as Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, I’ve also found inspiration in Joni Mitchell, Birdie and Ellie Goulding. Of course, every song I listen to has some sort of influence on my music and I like to listen to a lot of diverse music.
You’ve been performing on the live circuit for a long time – what’s your favourite thing about performing?
I love the energy and adrenaline of playing to an audience. It’s just the best feeling.
What can we expect from a Abi Hudson performance?
You can expect a really authentic gig experience. I play with a full band, no big production or anything. I love my band and we have a great time playing together so hopefully that translates when you come see us live.
What are your goals for 2017?
I’m already booking in some live shows for 2017, I want to make should I keep building my live reputation. And then I just want to build on the foundations of this year…put out my EP and of course keep writing and much new material as possible.
