Hailey Knox is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter who recently released her new single ‘Awkward‘ which was lifted from her debut EP ‘A Little Awkward‘.
The video for the new single is a modern day twist on the iconic Bob Dylan video, where she makes a powerful yet simple statement on parental boundaries and social media.
Not only is the young rising star carving out a huge career for herself she will also be hitting the road this summer as the support act for Charlie Puth’s ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ US tour.
Here Hailey Knox talks exclusively to Celeb Mix about her songwriting inspirations, her new music and her excitement at going on tour with Charlie Puth.
How old were you when you wrote your first song? And what was the song about?
The very first song I wrote was around the age of 10. I picked up my little yellow ukulele and wrote a song about a boy I had a crush on – it was called “Sugarplum.” I remember forgetting the melody and being so upset. It came back to me the next day and I automatically recorded it on voice memo!
When writing new songs do you write the lyrics or melody first?
I begin with a melody or chord progression then incorporate lyrics that I think fit the melody. I’ll start strumming on guitar or build up a loop then sing over it. Often [at] times I’ll have a voice memo rolling and listen back to it.
If you could write for any artist who would you choose?
I’m not sure who I’d like to write for, but I would love to write with Jon Bellion, Ed Sheeran, Allen Stone or Frank Ocean! I’m huge fan of their music.
What inspired you to write your EP A Little Awkward?
A lot of things inspired the EP “A little Awkward”. My struggles as a teen, my feelings of self doubt, my relationships and all the weird feelings/situations I found myself in!
How excited are you about supporting Charlie Puth on tour?
I’m extremely excited. It doesn’t seem real that I’ll be opening for him. I started freaking out when my manager told me. I cannot wait!
How did you find out Charlie Puth wanted you on the tour?
Charlie Puth heard my EP and loved the music! I couldn’t believe that I was going to have the opportunity to open for him let alone meet him!
What is your favourite thing about being on the road?
I love seeing all of the different cities and architecture. In each state, there are so many cool restaurants and shops to explore. I also enjoy meeting new people and getting to play in such unique venues.
How do you keep your voice in tip top shape while on tour?
I drink a lot of water and keep up with my vocal warm-ups/workouts. I also try to get as much rest as possible and [I] Skype with my vocal coach!
Which city are you most looking forward to performing in?
I can’t wait to perform in Florida because my cousins will be at the show and I’ll get to hang out with them afterwards. I don’t see them often so it will be awesome getting to spend some time with them.
After a show how do you unwind?
After a performance, I’ll usually hang out with my family and friends that came to see me! I’ll grab a bite to eat and sleep a whole bunch.
