The final film in The Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay: Part 2 (2015), has been released and let me just say it’s definitely in the running for top film this year (in my book at least).
Mockingjay: Part 2 is the finale to the book series “The Hunger Games” that started being filmed in 2012. The original cast has stuck together for all four movies, with Jennifer Lawrence playing the lead character of Katniss Everdeen, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark.
One thing I definitely enjoyed was the plot for the film followed the plot in the book. The events that took place were in the same order as the book; even some of the character’s script came straight from the chapters. You could tell the director paid attention to detail for each person’s line and knew that fans of the series would look for similar events in the film.
The costuming and set design was incredibly done. Each district had its own set of distinguished clothing and you could tell where each person came from just by looking at their outfits. The army squads all had hard, black suits with guns and weapons, while people from the districts wore clothing that was soft and colorful. The sets had detail- each room, wall, and building had been painted and decorated to bring the districts to life. Snow’s home in the Capitol in paticular had marble statues, bookshelves, and windows that added to each shot.
An important aspect of the plot is the romance triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, and the actors performed this in an amazing way. The scene of Katinss and Peeta underground, right after escaping from the mutts, is so moving. They both struggle to find each other emotionally throughout the entire film, and in that moment the characters connect. Once the group finds safety after escaping the underground tunnels, Gale and Peeta are shown talking while Katniss sleeps. They both recognize each other as men in her life, but they also realize that she can only choose one. Moments like these cannot happen without amazing actors.
Overall I was thoroughly impressed with Mockingjay: Part 2. The battle scenes, emotional moments, and an ending that leaves the audience at peace, this film is definitely one to be remembered.
