MTV has finally confirmed that its slasher adaptation Scream is starting afresh for its third season – sporting an all-new cast, story and creative team.
New showrunner Brett Matthews, whose credits include Buffy and Supernatural, will head up production. He’ll be joined (perhaps surprisingly) by actress and rapper Queen Latifah, whose creative ideas will serve her well as an executive producer. They’ll reportedly focus on adding diversity – particularly of colour – to the show’s cast. Harvey and Bob Weinstein will return also as executive producers from the first two seasons. The next task will presumably be to settle on a storyline and, y’know, hire some actors…
Scream launched on MTV in 2015, rebooting the classic 90s horror franchise. Its loveable cast, grizzly deaths and gripping cliffhangers earned it a hardened fandom (us included), but failed to gel with wider TV audiences – season 2 fell to an average of just 377,000 viewers.
The all-new Scream has yet to be given an ETA, but will consist of six episodes – shorter than the previous seasons’ 10 and 14.
