Orange is the New Black is back on Netflix with Season 4 and despite the cast being in a confined space with blank walls it is ever so exciting! When Season 3 ended it left us on a huge cliffhanger as the inmates took the opportunity to escape the confines of Litchfield Penitentiary and explore the forest right outside and jump into the lake for a moment of freedom. A lot has happened within the past three seasons of the show and there are still a lot of unanswered questions.
WARNING: There are spoilers in this article so read ahead at your own risk!
Episode one – Work That Body for Me
Inmates in the lake are ushered back into Litchfield by security in riot gear, however, it is not the security staff we know and love that are sent to deal with the inmate escape situation. Captuo calls for backup security from maximum security prison as security staff walk out over changes to Litchfield. The security staff from max are not taking any backtalk from inmates and we have to admit even from the screen they intimidate us.
As per usual Piper gets a bit too big for her boots when the new inmates come to Litchfield. Piper won’t stop bragging about how she set up Stella last season which saw Stella (Ruby Rose) taken to Maximum Security.
Meanwhile, Alex was right about somebody coming for her but definitely wrong about who wants to harm her. We are both surprised and pleased that Lolly comes to save Alex and the pair become an unlikely duo that we LOVE. As careful as the pair try to be about covering their tracks when they murder the guard assassin sent to kill Alex, in a kill or be killed bout of craziness, Frieda comes across the body in the greenhouse and the three inmates form a spontaneous sisterhood of dismemberment and burial. We were incredibly impressed with Laura Prepon (Alex Vause) and her delivery of emotion throughout the murder ordeal. That level of acting is as perfect as Alex’s eyeliner game, which is phenomenal and deserves to be appreciated.
Crazy-eyes (Suzanna) shares a romantic moment by the lake, in the forest, that is short lived with Maureen Kukudio. A once hidden in the background Maureen becomes obsessed with Suzanna’s story Time Hump and she tries to manipulate Suzanna into staying in the forest, fleeing the prison. Maureen becomes fixated on making Time Hump into a permanent false reality but Suzanna is too smart to say she will stay as she runs back to the prison to flee Maureen. Your romantic interest has to be driving you crazy if you prefer prison, has Crazy Eyes been out-crazied?
Morello is still reeling over her wedding day, Caputo is the new warden of Litchfield and famous chef Judy King is now a Litchfield inmate. Episode one threw us straight back into the deep end and we want to applaud the writers for being able to keep the Litchfield inmates characters’ consistent. Particularly Piper, who we are personally beginning to love and hate at the same time and we’re not sure how that makes us feel right now.
Our fave quote from Episode one:
Lolly: [Talking to Alex] “What’s your friends name again? Spout? Cylinder?”
Alex: “What? Piper?”
