Jon Bernthal is best known for his role as Shane Walsh in AMC’s The Walking Dead and Frank Castle in Netflix’s The Punisher, based on comic books by Marvel.

Bernthal was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the suburb of Cabin John, Maryland. He dropped out of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York after high school, but soon joined the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. After being discovered by the executive director of Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training, Bernthal completed his studies at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He has a background in theatre, having performed in over 30 plays regionally and off-Broadway since 2002. Prior to being cast as Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead, for which he gained critical acclaim and was nominated for Scream Award’s 2011 Male Breakout Performance Award, Bernthal had small guest roles the TV series How I Met Your Mother and CSI: Miami. Bernthal has also starred in various films, including Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), The Accountant (2016), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Baby Driver (2017). Bernthal made his debut as Frank Castle/The Punisher in the second season of Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil, before starring in the self-titled series, The Punisher, from 2017. For his role in The Punisher, Bernthal was nominated for the 2017 Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television.
