If you are searching for authenticity in its truest sense of meaning, you need not go beyond Iriao. The ethno-jazz band will be bringing the combination of Georgian folk and jazz on Eurovision stage in May. Here is everything you need to know about the band:
Who is Iriao?
Iriao is an ethno-fusion band led by David Malazonia. Derived from the phrase “Iriao-uruao”, the group’s name refers back to the famous yodeling singing style “Krimanchuli” from Georgian polyphonic music tradition. Iriao’s identity and repertoire is based on their capability to bring together polyphonic tradition and modern musical elements.
They gave their debut performance in Tbilisi in the year 2013 and have been gaining popularity ever since.
Who are the members of Iriao?
- David Malazonia
- Nugzar Kavtaradze
- Bidzina Murgulia
- Levan Abshilava
- Shalva Gelekva
- George Abashidze
- Mikheil Javakhishvili
What is their most popular song?
“For You”
The group will be representing their country with this single at Eurovision Song Contest 2018. As shared in our review for the single,
“For You” is the kind of single that focuses a lot on sound. Combining polyphony with Jazz, the group has tried to offer a combination of melodies that are just pleasing to hear. When compared to songs released by other participants, “For You” stands out amongst the crowd. Opting to move against the grain, Georgia seems to place its bet on originality over trend.”
