Chinese/American singer-songwriter Emei is an up-and-coming artist to watch. Her latest release is the hard-hitting alt rock single “That Girl” that has been making waves on playlists everywhere.
“That Girl” impresses with colorful garage rock guitars and a sing-a-long worthy anthemic chorus. Emei fuses pop-punk and rock for a gritty, heart-on-your-sleeve musical moment. Emei’s vocals begin subdued and introspective but soon culminate into an emotional plea for perfection, a perfect metaphor for the song’s deep meaning. On the release she confides, “written on a whim after weeks of trying to keep a habit checklist and failing miserably. The pop rock inspired anthem encapsulates the energy of wanting so badly to be that girl who wakes up at 6 AM, goes on walks every morning, and drinks coffee black but never getting to that unattainable goal.”
Emei began her musical project during the pandemic but has had years of performance experience playing stadium shows in China as a young teen. Currently based in Los Angeles, Emei connects with her listeners through her TikTok who are enthralled by her charismatic personality and shared upcoming music snippets. With more music to come, we can’t wait to hear what is next from this Gen Z songwriter.
