Powerhouse vocalist AleXa put months of anticipation to an end after she shared her brand new single “sick” with listeners. This track kicks off an exciting new era for the singer as it follows her last single, “Juliet,” which was released back in 2023. After performing “sick” on The Kelly Clarkson Show before its official release, the single began garnering a ton of attention online. Fans have been eager to hear the studio version for over a month now, but the wait is over. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, AleXa opens up about “sick,” musical inspirations, and what’s in store for the rest of 2024.
What can you tell us about your highly anticipated single “sick” and the inspiration behind that track?
It’s a new sound to introduce a new era of AleXa, and the following songs will only get better and better. “sick” was produced by a team of really talented songwriters and producers that I’ve been lucky to work with, and I think the brilliance of the lyrics is that they can be up to interpretation by the listener. My personal interpretation of the lyrics are the complete opposite of its initial intent; I see the story of ‘sick’ as the person you’re with/you love is so self-centered with a god-complex and it makes you sick.
How does this single differ from other tracks you have released in the past?
I’ve never attempted this genre before and it marks my first 100% English release that is meant for more of a Western audience.
What artists are you currently listening to and do any artists or bands in particular inspire your music currently?
Slipknot is my favorite band, along with a handful of other metal and hard-rock bands. I don’t tend to make the music I listen to, but with future releases, I’m emulating the emo/punk artists I listened to growing up.
Does “sick” kick off a string of releases for 2024? Are you planning on releasing a full-length project this year?
We’re aiming for a mini-album by the summer. We’re still playing around with tracks that would fit the mood and tone of the album, and I hope that I can showcase more music that I write for it.
For fans just discovering your music, what do you want them to know about you as both a person and artist?
There’s a lore, but honestly, if that kind of stuff confuses you, that’s okay! Just enjoy the music and the kick-ass music videos. I myself am entirely different from the AleXa persona, but if you follow me on social media, you’re bound to learn the real me in time.
Do you have any specific goals for 2024 when it comes to your career as an artist?
I just want to release more music that I write and to promote in Korea again.
What else can fans look forward to in the near or distant future?
Throwback nostalgia. My next release is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever released.
