Today we’re joined by DJ GAWP, a rising star in the world of electronic dance music. With a style that blends elements of house, techno, and bass, he’s been steadily building a following and gaining recognition from fans and fellow DJs alike. We asked him about his latest release, a remix of Devon James and Hundreds Thousands’ “Risky Business,” as well as his inspiration, creative process, and other passions.
Hey GAWP, welcome to CelebMix! For these of our readers who are not familiar with your music, could you introduce yourself?
I’m GAWP, named after a track I made and my friend just gawped at me.. Americans would say “GAWK” like gawking… aside from that I do lots of mixing and mastering at Most Wanted Audio, my studio in Leeds. Worked with some of the industry’s top labels and artists, Ive also worked on Sample Packs, Synth Presets, Computer Game Soundtracks,
Congratulations on your new remix of Devon James and Hundreds Thousands’ “Risky Business.” Talk to us about this new release, what’s the inspiration behind the remix?
I’ve known Devon for 5 years and we have played many gigs and events on the same lineups, we even ate Pizza on many of them which has become a tradition! Devon and I are set to do the orbit DJ retreat this summer which will be amazing.. 20 students in villas learning music production and industry insights with many legends in the game. The remix was selected from Devon’s latest album as I heard the potential it had to do a remix. The remix angle I went for was heavy but euphoric as the vocal has an ambient flow, so what better to give it some low end GAWP groove with detailed licks.
Your remix was lined up on one record next to Charlie Soul Clap, and Schroeds. Did you get a chance to check out their remixes?
Yes, as expected the remixes were on point and did the original some justice! Deffo added them to my playlists.
You are known for your crisp and techy house. How would you describe your sound?
It’s hard to describe my sound as every tracks so different but I would like to think its the sonic sounds that people adhere to as I do spend hours on crafting using hardware and processing to give it a unique “Crispyness”. I would agree I’m not the best a musical writing but creating audio that bangs in the clubs is deffo a strong side to what I do.
Can you name some DJ/producers on your radar at the moment that you think we should be checking out?
Doorly, Hauswerks, Marc Spence, Dipzy, Codes, Truth x Lies, Elijah and Grundy are some of my favourites and owe me a beer now for mentioning them.
What other passions do you have other than producing and writing music?
I do like photography, traveling the world with music has enabled me to take photos.. so much so I ended up being an Ice Hockey photographer for a season. @oliverportamento on insta.
For anyone who wants to join you on the dancefloor, what gigs do you have coming up?
30/04 FML PRESENTS THE AFTERS, HI FI CLUB, UK
2023 BOMBSTRIKES THE RING BEATHERDER FESTIVAL – UK
2023 HEADLAND FESTIVAL – UK
2023 SECRET SUBROSA – UK
03/04 BOOMBOX CIRCUS – UK
Finally, what are you most excited for in 2023?
Lots of things planned for 2023, I’ve just released some of my favourite music so if anyone’s just found out about me id suggest checking out the last few releases they are on some great labels such as Incorrect, Altra Moda, Panterra which is Matt Sassaris Label.. also releasing on Idris Elba’s label and doing a remix for him which was an honour… I’m also throwing my own label Parties Prime Society Records, working on getting back to the states as I’ve applied for my visa and as soon as that gets approved I can start planning a tour! as I mentioned being a mentor at Orbit DJ Retreats in Sept / October which I suggest people check out if they are interested in levelling up their music careers. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read this far!
