Madrid-based Afro house duo Sparrow & Barbossa return with their next single ‘Vagabundo’, a fiery flamenco electronic banger in collaboration with the vocal and guitar talents of Chico Castillo (Gypsy Kings), known throughout the Latin Pop world as “The Gypsy.” The track is out now, worldwide, across digital platforms via Sony Latin imprint Orianna.
‘Vagabundo’’ opens with Castillo displaying his mastery of flamenco guitar, introducing the song’s protagonist, a gypsy wanderer in the deep throes of a romantic obsession. The track explores Spain’s rich tradition of flamenco music and dance, with Sparrow & Barbossa fusing the genre’s iconic rhythmic hand clapping with chugging hypnotic beats. The result is an intoxicating dance floor destroyer.
The production duo enlisted acclaimed London-based music video producer Yasha Malekzad to bring the track to life in visual form. Using Madrid as the backdrop, a mysterious mirror masked figure sets off in the night, casting supernatural spells as he dances along the city’s busy thoroughfares and quiet passages. Through his journey, he becomes aware of the pain and suffering surrounding him, absorbing it as his own. Using the power of flamenco, he transforms this pain into pure love, releasing it back into the world.
We caught up with Sparrow & Barbossa to find out more…
Hi Sparrow & Barbossa and welcome to CelebMix. Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new single “Vagabundo”. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you?
This song is the third single or our second album “Réciprocité” and plays a key part in it and the way we try to transmit ethnic cultures through house music. The collaboration with Chico Castillo from Gypsy Kings was absolutely smooth and rich, we ejoyed every second of it and are very proud of it. It is the second afro-flamenco track we produce after “Morena” in 2020 that still is a hit.
Your upcoming album, Réciprocité, is set for release in just a month’s time. Can you give us a sneak peek into what we can expect from the album in terms of sound and themes?
In the same line as Seven Seas our first album, it is a travel around different cultures and vibes. It ranges from Amapiano to Caribbean, Afro, Oriental and Latin House and features collabs with artists such as “Starving Yet Full” (Ex Azari & III (Hungry For The Power), Maria De Moraes (Legendary Vinicius De Moraes’ daughter), Phindile Ndlovu (Lion King), Idd Aziz (Grammy) amongst others.
“Bien Buena” and “Condenao” were the first two singles from your upcoming album, and have enjoyed considerable success since their release. How does all of this new music represent your artistic growth and development since your last album?
All of this new music paves the way of our new live performance we’re going to roll out in the upcoming months and hopefully will set a new standard within the industry.
You both come from different cultural backgrounds. How have your individual backgrounds influenced your sound and approach to music?
Sparrow & Barbossa is indeed a mix of different cultures, generations and skills, but in the end it’s the union of two real pasionated musicians and I think our music can really relate that. Every bit of it is a mix of cultural an ethnical influences and will definitely stay that way !
You are embarking on a tour across Latin America, Albania, and Ibiza throughout Spring and Summer 2023. What can fans expect from your live shows, and how do you prepare for them?
Fans can expect A LOT of unreleased music as always as we’re already working on a third album and have big releases coming in labels such as Rampa’s VOD
What are your future plans after the tour and the release of your album? Are there any other exciting projects or collaborations that you are working on?
“Champion” the track we’re releasing on VOD is definitely one of the most anticipated tracks of this year and we can’t wait for it to be out to the world.
