Jorja Smith has been announced as the winner of the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award 2018.

The ‘On My Mind’ singer was part of a trio of female nominees, alongside Mabel McVey and Stefflon Don. Whilst all three have had a stellar year, Jorja was chosen as the overall winner, becoming the first unsigned artist to win the award.

Winning the award tops off a huge year for Jorja. Not only has she released tracks such as ‘Teenage Fantasy’ and ‘On My Mind’, but she collaborated with Drake on two tracks from his More Life album. She even had the opportunity to join him as a special guest at his UK headline shows.

Speaking abut winning the award, Jorja said: “I cannot believe it, it’s been an unforgettable 2017 during which I’ve fulfilled so many of my dreams and this is such a special way to end the year… and to be part of an all female shortlist alongside Mabel and Stefflon Don, who’ve both had incredible 2017s, makes it even better! There’s lots more to come in 2018 from all of us and I will do my best to make it another memorable year!”

Jorja is the 11th winner of the prestigious award, which has predicted some of the UK’s finest talent since the award was launched in 2008. Previous winners include Adele, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and Rag’n’Bone Man.

BRITs Chairman and Chairman & CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland Jason Iley said: “The Critics’ Choice Award has an incredible track record of showcasing some of the most exciting up-and-coming artists for the last ten years. Jorja Smith has a huge future ahead of her and looks set to follow in the footsteps of the most successful past Critics’ Choice winners.”

The award will be given to Jorja at the BRITs nominations launch on January 13 2018, where she will also be performing. The BRIT Awards 2018 will take place on February 21.
