Berlin-based artist Marlena Dae releases her new track, “No Place To Hide,” the lead single from her forthcoming debut EP, A Delicate Storm.
“No Place To Hide” narrates the tale of an enigmatic young woman desperate to make money to escape her current reality. Wandering the streets in the small hours of the night, she is surrounded by looming peril.
Marlena explains, “I feel I can relate to this longing for freedom in ‘No Place To Hide.’ Trying to escape one’s reality was definitely a topic for me at the time during quarantine. I feel for this main character who is aware of the dangers that lurk around her, yet she is determined to get to where she needs to be.”
Born in New York City and raised on a farm in upstate New York, Marlena began writing and singing songs at an early age. Later, she was influenced by R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. Classically trained in piano and voice, in 2011 she moved to Germany. Along with piano, she plays guitar, writing her own material as well as songs for other artists.
“I love the process of songwriting, of creating something out of nothing. I love putting my feelings or experiences into a song. It’s easier for me to put it into music than to talk about it with friends,” Marlena shares.
“No Place To Hide” opens on a dark, rumbling bassline topped by Marlena’s seductively spellbinding vocals, revealing subtle nuances and sensuous timbres. Drenched in retro ‘80s flavors of new wave and hints of sophisti-pop, the tune conjures up suggestions of Depeche Mode merged with Sade – simultaneously edgy and oh-so silkily voluptuous.
“She talking money like it’s nothing / Like she doesn’t love it / Oh and the honeys stand up for it / Yeah yeah yeah.”
