Melanie C has been announced as the latest ‘Album Champion’ for National Album Day 2026, joining PinkPantheress and Max Richter CBE in celebrating the enduring cultural importance of the album format.
The ninth edition of National Album Day will take place on October 17th, with this year’s theme, “Icons”, celebrating the artists and records that have helped shape popular culture across generations and genres. As one of Britain’s most recognisable recording artists, with a career that has spanned one of pop’s defining groups, a hugely successful solo run and nearly three decades at the centre of British popular culture, Melanie C is a fitting choice for a theme that celebrates true pop icons.
As “Sporty Spice”, Melanie C helped propel the Spice Girls to global superstardom. The group’s 1996 debut, ‘Spice’, remains the best-selling album by a female group in history, while the band as a whole has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
But Melanie C’s story hardly ended with the Spice Girls. She launched her solo career with 1999’s ‘Northern Star’, which has sold close to 2.5 million copies worldwide, before scoring international hits including ‘I Turn to You’ and ‘Never Be the Same Again’. Her 2020 self-titled album was a critical and commercial reminder of her enduring place in pop, while her latest record, ‘Sweat’, released in May, became her highest-charting solo album to date, reaching the Top Three of the Official Albums Chart.
Now, as she prepares to embark on her biggest headline world tour this month, Melanie is turning her attention to the format that has been a constant throughout her career.

Speaking about becoming an ‘Album Champion’, Melanie said: “I’ve always loved albums because they tell a story. They’re a chance for an artist to take you on a journey, to share different sides of themselves and create something that’s bigger than just a collection of songs.”
“Some of my favourite musical memories come from listening to an album from start to finish, and I still love discovering new records in that way today. There’s something magical about the artwork and owning an album you can actually hold in your hands.”
Melanie joins previously announced ‘Album Champions’ PinkPantheress and Max Richter CBE, with further champions set to be revealed ahead of National Album Day.
The 2026 “Icons” theme will look across generations and genres, celebrating artists who have helped shape popular culture and define the sound of their respective eras. Previous National Album Day themes have included Rock, the Nineties, Women in Music, Debut Albums and Great British Groups.
From The Beatles and David Bowie to Oasis and the Spice Girls, and from Little Simz and Raye to Lola Young, the organisers argue that musical icons are not confined to a particular era or genre. Instead, their influence can be measured in the artists they inspire, the culture they shape and the records that continue to find new audiences.
National Album Day’s ninth edition will once again be presented in association with BBC Radio 2, with the station and BBC Sounds supporting the event. Exclusive product releases are also expected to be announced in the run-up to October 17th.
For Melanie C, becoming an ‘Album Champion’ represents an opportunity to celebrate something that has remained remarkably resilient despite the dramatic changes in how we consume music.
