There’s a hearty offering of masochism behind the breezy indie-pop tones of rising star Alessi Rose and the singer’s trademark sound is at its best yet on latest single ‘break me’.
For fans of Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift and Madison Beer, the songwriter is a surefire winner with her lovesick tales. The London-based star first found success posting covers on YouTube at the age of 13 and debuted as an artist last year with ‘say ur mine’.
On that track, Alessi pleads with a crush to ‘love me like it’s not a chore to’ and the release was followed up with the homesick ‘hate this part’ and giddy ‘eat me alive’.
The singer jokes in her Instagram bio that ‘if people don’t want to write songs about them, they shouldn’t do bad things’ and that pretty iconic mantra is at the heart of new release ‘break me’ – which was premiered by Mollie King on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday night.
Over her most daring production yet, the 21-year-old invites a love interest to wreak havoc on her life.
Alessi told CelebMix: “‘break me’ is about someone who you know doesn’t actually like you that much, but just wants you/someone there, and even though you are fully aware of that, sometimes you consider going along with it.
“It’s like very aware self-sabotage that you think could be fun and spontaneous but you know also has the capacity to break you.”
The singer will play her very first headline show in London later this month at St Pancras Old Church having cut her teeth on support sets since debuting last year. Alessi will also take to the stage at The Great Escape and Latitude festivals this year.
