At a time when the world seems to be filled with so much hate, mistrust, and division, Afro-folk singer and songwriter Naomi Wachira aims to give listeners a sense of hope with her upcoming album Song of Lament, which is heavily influenced by the current political climate, as well as her own identity, being a Kenyan-born woman.
Wachira is giving fans a glimpse of Song of Lament with her latest release, “Beautifully Human,” a title fit with the theme of her album, which reminds people that despite our differences, we are all just human.

Wachira says the idea for the album “was born out the many tragic losses we’ve witnessed globally – ranging from cases of police brutality to the refugee crisis.” Taking inspiration from musicians Tracy Chapman and Miriam Makeba, Wachira realized the potential her music can have to change the world, so when it was time to hit the studio, she took it as an opportunity to express her feelings about current events happening in the world right now.
When asked what she hopes to accomplish with this album, Wachira said she wants to give people a sense of hope that things can, and will get better.
If there’s one thing I learned from my parents, it is to try and leave a place better than I found it. My hope is that this album will do just that. I know we are certainly living in dark times, but I hope that we will all find the courage to be light in whatever way we’ve been gifted… that we will seek to understand those who are different from us and find ways to both acknowledge and celebrate our differences and similarities.
Naomi Wachira’s sophomore album, Song of Lament, will be available in June. Pre-order the album here. If you would also like to keep up with Wachira, make sure you follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
