After a lot of teasing on social media, Selena Gomez has made a welcome return to the music scene today with the release of her new single, ‘Bad Liar’.
Co-written by Selena and long-term collaborators Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels and Ian Kirkpatrick, the song is a certified bop. The track also samples Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’, which derived from Selena and Julia’s love for the band.
In an interview with Variety, collaborator Justin said: “Selena and Julia are Talking Heads-obsessed. So when we all got together in one room, Julia suggested, ‘Why don’t we just write over the bassline from ‘Psycho Killer?’ and we were all going, ‘That sounds great!'”
The track has also been given the seal of approval by Talking Heads’ David Byrne. Justin said: “He heard it, loved it and approved it. Which was a pretty crazy moment for us. To have David Byrne listed next to our names is just so cool.”
The music video for ‘Bad Liar’ has been released via Spotify, which some may believe is an unusual strategy. However, considering that Selena is the 10th most listened to artist in the world on the music platform, with over 30 million monthly listeners, we think it makes a lot of sense. Selena shared the song’s lyrics earlier too, so there’s no excuse not to learn this song off by heart.
Whilst we wait for the music video to reach YouTube, check out the official audio below.
As of late, Selena has been busy working on the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why. She is one of the executive producers, and following its runaway success, it’s been confirmed that a second season will air next year.
‘Bad Liar’ shows that Selena has grown as an artist – it’s a different, stripped back sound from her and only the beginning of her new era of music. It’s so good to have you back Selena!
