The 1975 made their Live Lounge return, covering the biggest song in the world right now, ‘thank u, next.’
Prior to playing the cover, frontman Matty Healy spoke about Ariana, stating that she’s someone “I’ve started to really care about for some reason. She’s had a right old tough time and I like her a lot. I think she’s cool. And she’s got a great voice.”
The band put an alternative gospel twist onto the Number one hit. completely changing the song to one that would slot perfectly into The 1975 discography, and while it’s so different to the original, we kind of love it.
The band are live lounge veterans, with many appearances in the iconic room and incredible covers such as One Direction’s debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, Clean Bandit’s number one single ‘Rather Be’, and their phenomenal one hour long performance with the BBC’s philharmonic orchestra in 2016. in celebration of their sophomore album, which came out in January of that year.
Their latest live lounge stint comes just ahead of the release of their third studio album ‘‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’, which will be released this Friday and has already been noted as their best work by many critics (NME, Gigwise.) The band also played ‘It’s Not Living (If Its Not With You’), ‘Sincerity is Scary’ and ‘TOOTIMETOOTIME’, which will be uploaded to the BBCRadio1Vevo channel soon.
