From Buble to Bukowski…
Picking up a book every now and then is important (and opening it up and reading it even more important!), but right now we’re part of a generation who apparently don’t bother reading at all *gasps*
Ok, so that’s not completely true – you’re reading this now, and you might read magazines or fanfiction or different kinds of literature, but on the whole studies show that young people just don’t read enough books these days!
In an attempt to remedy this, I’ve compiled a list of the best books that your faves are reading! Now, although I say that these are your faves faves, that’s a bit of a lie…these are books your fave has been reading recently, or has talked about reading before, but I can’t guarantee in every case that they love them or these books are their fave. But “Books your fave is/has reading/read and may or may not enjoy” just wasn’t as snappy a title.
Maybe you can use these as a way to ease yourself in to a new love of literature based on what your fave is reading, or maybe you just want a book recommendation to feed your already existing love of literature courtesy of your fave!
Either way, here it is; a list of some of the books your fave has read or is reading, and that we think you might love, too!
Louis Tomlinson
Louis has been papped with a book of his hand a few times, and a bit of digging deeper should lead to a few more recommendations courtesy of Tommo, but earlier this year, after a long haul flight, Louis was seen leaving the airport with a copy of Jon Ronson’s The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry. Ronson, known for writing works like The Men Who Stare at Goats, has a distinctive writing style, and this book is an exploration in to the concept of Psychopathy, and an exploration in to mental health and the associated industries. This book is better for those of you who don’t want to indulge too much in fiction, since it is basically a written documentary, but it is told in such a way that it’s exciting and engaging where it could be dull and boring. Louis seems to have a preference for autobiographical and non-fiction works, as he’s also enjoyed both Michael Buble’s and David Beckham’s autobiographies in the past, listing them as some of his favourites as well. Louis knows more than most that a story doesn’t have to be made up for it to be worth reading!
Taylor Swift
If you want to read one of Taylor Swift’s favourite books, a safe bet would be to read anything written by, or written about, the Fitzgeralds! F Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, are undoubtedly amongst Taylor’s favourite authors! In past interviews, it has been revealed that Taylor had a copy of his book The Great Gatsby open by her bed for a bit of nighttime reading, and when asked the last book she read in a later interview, it was a book about Zelda, as well as proclaiming on many occasions her love for them both.
But, Taylor is clearly an avid reader, and has identified on Tumblr that John Green, writer of Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns, was amongst her favourite authors, as well as admitting she agreed to sing on The Hunger Games because it was another of her favourite books. Other books she’s talked about loving in the past? To Kill A Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet and The Scarlet Letter (both of which are referenced in her song Love Story, and the latter again in New Romantics!) and, always keen to educate herself further, has confessed her love for reading books about American History and Historical American Figures, one of her favourites being Ethel Kennedy!
So if you’re a Taylor Swift fan, basically, the list of books she loves that you might love too is endless, and there’s no shortage of recommendations from her!
Zayn Malik
Zayn has given shout-outs in the past to many books and even admits he wanted to be an English teacher before he joined the biggest boy-band in history. One time, when questioned who was the bands Lothario, the boys got side tracked talking about what a Lothario is, when Zayn remarked that it basically means a womanizer, and even knew that its roots come from the name of a character in the classic novel Don Quixote!. For something a little easier to read than Don Quixote, Zayn’s Bio Section in early 1D annuals listed all of the Harry Potter series as one of his favourite books! Though many will have read Harry Potter, for those who haven’t but want to read more, it’s a great place to start, and advances in depth, size and complexity as the series goes on!
If you want to start reading a bit more, but aren’t really sure big, chunky books are your thing, then it might be a good idea to take a leaf out of Zayn’s book and start reading some Comic Books! Zayn is a professed big fan of comic books (and their movie adaptations!) and even has a comic book inspired tattoo! The list of places to start with Comic Books are endless, so if, like Zayn, that’s your kind of thing…then you’re best to just dive right in!
Camilla and Lauren from Fifth Harmony!
At least Two of the five Fifth Harmony Girls have shown themselves to be avid readers, and where more than happy to share some of their favourites with an Interviewer in the past! Though Camilla was in the middle of reading it at the time of the interview where they revealed this, Lauren is another superstar who lists To Kill A Mockingbird as her favourite, calling it “beautifully written”. Both girls were quick to show their love for another John Green book, The Fault in Our Stars, but Camilla said that her favourite book was Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, a story set in Germany during World War 2, and narrated by none other than Death himself! It’s a beautiful and haunting book, heart-warming and heart-wrenching, and we full agree with Camilla that it’s definitely worth a read!
Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson
During an interview with Scholastic, all four of the Little Mix girls were asked what their favourite book was. Neither Leigh Anne nor Jade answered (or at least their answers weren’t printed!), and Perrie said that she loved anything by Dr Suess (The Cat in the Hat, or How The Grinch Stole Christmas, for example), but it was Jesy who gave the most interesting and original answer, telling us that Dave Pelzer’s A Child Called It was her absolute favourite book. It’s not as famous as any of the other suggestions, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good, and if Jesy Nelson thinks it’s work a read, then that’s enough to convince us. If you’re a Little Mix fan, it might be enough to convince you, too!
Harry Styles
Like bandmate Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles is another pop superstar regularly papped with a book in hand, especially after a long-haul flight! It’s a good thing some of the stars prefer a bit of light reading, cause Harry’s choice of book is anything but that! Styles was papped reading Screams From The Balcony, a collection of letters written by Poet and Novellist Charles Bukowski! Screams From The Balcony doesn’t seem like the kind of book you read without already knowing the author, so we reckon that Harry Styles was probably a big fan of Bukowski before he even picked up this book, so if you’re looking for literature suggestions from Harry Styles, pretty much anything by Charles Bukowski seems like it’d be a safe bet.
Daniel Radcliffe
Unsurprisingly, Daniel Radcliffe lists Harry Potter as one of his favourite ever books (and the one that most changed his life!). How could he not, considering he is Harry Potter in the first place? That’s not the only book he loves, though, and he says that “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov is his favourite book “in the world ever”. “It’s the greatest exploration of human imagination” he said, claiming that the instant he finished reading it, he wants to pick it back up and start all over again! That’s exactly what our favourite books should do, so if you love Harry Potter, but want to try something different, The Master and Margarita might be the book for you!
We don’t expect you to read all of these books at once, of course, but with some of our favourite people ever loving literature from Harry Potter to Don Quixote, from Buble to Bukowski and from Dr Seuss to John Green, there’s a whole world of recommendations about what your next read should be!
