To celebrate CelebMix’s fifth anniversary, we have taken a closer look at some of our favourite celebrities, and the different aspects that we love about them.
For this article, we have decided to share with you our top five favourite music videos by Britney Spears!
5. “Womanizer” (2008)
This music video was for the lead single for Britney’s sixth studio album, “Circus” (2008), which was considered Britney’s ‘comeback’ following a series of high profile personal struggles for her. Britney herself came up with the storyline.
It’s very similar to the “Toxic” video in a way, in which Britney disguises herself as several different woman. Plotwise, the video focuses on Britney following her boyfriend through his day in order to expose his cheating ways, as she flirts with her man under these disguises to prove his womanizing ways (as the song would suggest).
The reasons why we love this video so much are simply because it’s cheeky, funny and creative, with fierce choreography throughout and some great disguises (we particularly love the waitress one, with Britney wearing a red wig). It was a brilliant video for Britney to make her comeback once and for all.
4. “…Baby One More Time” (1998)
The one that started it all, yet after all these years, there’s no denying how iconic and memorable this music video really is. The video for Britney’s debut single, and the lead single off of the album of the same name (1999). This clip takes place at a catholic high school, with scenes taking place in the school corridor, in the gym and also just outside the school building.
Although the plot is simple, the direction, choreography and the outfits help make the video stand out as one of the most memorable offerings from Britney’s career. The schoolgirl outfit, for starters, is a classic Britney outfit. It caused some controversy at the time due to a 16-year-old Britney’s school shirt being tied up and exposing her midriff (which was actually her idea), but that helped make the outfit all the more iconic and edgy. Not only that, but the choreography – who hasn’t attempted it? One of the best to come from any of her videos.
3. “I’m a Slave 4 U” (2001)
This music video was a massive turning point in Britney’s career and helped to cement her into the superstar she is today. “I’m a Slave 4 U” was the lead single for her self-titled third studio album, “Britney” (2001), and probably the most mature single she had released at that time. So of course, with Britney releasing a more ‘adult’ song in her career, influenced by R&B and hip hop, along came a pretty sexy and grown up video for it.
The video takes place in a sauna, and focuses on hot, sweaty, and highly intense choreography throughout – which is fitting as the song is lyrically about being a ‘slave’ to the music. The choreography is some of the best to come out of a Britney Spears music video. It flows really well and showcases her ability as a dancer and performer. Moreover, this clip really is the epitome of ‘sexy’. We see Britney in a more daring and sensual way than ever before. Her choice of outfit in the video during the dance scenes remains one of our favourites.
2. “Toxic” (2004)
The video for the second single released from Britney’s fourth studio album, “In the Zone” (2003). “…Baby One More Time” (1998) asides, this has to be up there as one of Britney’s most recognisable music videos to the public. Everything about this video is purely spectacular and proved to everyone just how much of a driving force in pop music Britney Spears really was.
We see Britney in various disguises: first, as an air hostess, second as a secret agent with flame-red hair, and towards the end of the video, as a superheroine with black hair. The video concerns Britney on a mission to find a secret antidote which she then uses to poison her love interest – and the concept is executed so well. It is a thrilling watch.
Perhaps the most important aspect of the video is the scenes of Britney wearing a nude bodysuit covered entirely in diamonds – both sexy and renowned for being one of the more memorable looks from Britney’s videography. Everything about it is simply iconic.
1.“Stronger” (2000)
Our favourite Britney Spears music video has to be one of the most edgy and futuristic ever from the singer. The video for the third single from her second studio album, “Oops!… I Did It Again”; Britney also came up with the concept. It might not necessarily be as glossy as some of Britney’s later videos, but everything about this one is just so special to us.
Taking place in a futuristic world, the video sees Britney leave her boyfriend behind at a party, all before later driving off in her car. As her car spins out halfway through the song, Britney leaves the burnt out vehicle to walk off her troubles in the pouring rain. It is a pretty empowering way to overcome a hurtful lover, which fits with the themes of the song.
The video is also notable for including scenes of Britney dancing with a chair, in which she took inspiration from the videos for Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” (1987) and “Miss You Much” (1989). If anyone else can pull off dancing with a chair other than Janet Jackson herself, then it is Britney. It is one of the most versatile dances out of any of her videos.
