American pop girlie Addison Rae continues to defy expectations and live by her own rules this week, with the launch of her latest single ‘Diet Pepsi’.
Signalling something of a new beginning for the rising star, the provocative track (her first with Columbia Records) leans into themes of “flirtation and playful seduction” and serves as her first solo release of 2024.
Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, and written by Addison herself along with Luka Kloser and Elvira Anderfjärd (who also act as producers) the song is an unexpected sonic departure from the material featured on Rae’s debut EP ‘AR’, with its pulsing synths and hypnotic beat seemingly more reflective of the daring artist the triple-threat performer has become in recent years.
The singles accompanying music video – directed by Sean Price Williams (Sabrina Carpenter), with creative direction by Interview Magazine Editor-in-Chief Mel Ottenberg – sees Addison cruising down the highway in a steamed up vintage car alongside model/actor Drew Van Acker (Pretty Little Liars) climbing from the front to the backseat as the chorus repeats: “Say you love, say you love, say you love me, losing all my innocence in the backseat…” interpolated with choreography by Danielle Polanco.
At the sound of a soda can cracking open, the video transforms into “beautiful technicolor” for the final chorus of the song.
