Alex & Me – Film Review

Disclaimer: Warner Bros Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-Ray I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.
The eyes of the world are on the soccer realm right now as the 2018 World Cup is taking place in Russia. As teams from around the world compete to take home the title of champion, fans tune in to every game to watch their favorites take the field.

There’s also a reason that the eyes of the pop culture realm are on the soccer world right now. It’s the premiere of the film, Alex & Me which stars The United States’ Women’s National Team’s Alex Morgan.

Morgan also plays for Orlando Pride and, more importantly, serves as a role model for young women around the world. She’s strong, passionate, full of conviction, and talented beyond her years. We’ve been lucky enough to see Morgan in a few games and you walk away knowing you’ve just seen talent that doesn’t come around very often.

It comes as no surprise that she was chosen to be the hero in Alex & Me.

The trailer for the film showcased Morgan in her debut film role and she looks as excited to star as we were to watch it. While she played a coach in the film, she was coached to prepare for her role before filming started. It was said that Morgan welcomed critique and wanted to give all of her best to the role in this film.

Even though she plays herself, it’s in a very specific way. She brings hope, inspiration, and the possibility of a dream come true to someone who considers her a hero. It’s a massive deal.

The premise of Alex & Me is simple and sweet. Morgan’s biggest fan Reagan is working hard to make her dreams come true, even without the support of the people around her. She needs someone to believe in her, and who better to step up than Morgan herself. In a special (and somewhat painful) moment, the Morgan on Reagan’s poster comes to life and becomes her mentor.

The two train together, pulling long days and stopping at nothing to prepare Reagan to overcome obstacles and be the soccer player she’s always dreamed of becoming. Through her dedication to the sport and determination to be her best, those around her start to see the side of her they didn’t pay enough attention to before. It’s a true coming of age film, one anyone with a dream can relate to.

Seriously, how amazing would it be to be trained by someone you’ve looked up to forever?

Towards the end of the film, you see that things might not have been exactly what they seemed, but the truth is – if you have one person that believes in you, you can do anything.

Alex & Me is available on digital streaming services and DVD, now.
