Ariana and the Rose is ready to take us on a journey through love and loss with her brand new EP.
Released on Friday, Retrograde is a four-song EP which showcases Ariana’s growth as an artist. The four tracks are: ‘How Does That Make You Feel’, RKCB collab ‘Love You Lately’, ‘These Ruins’ and ‘Supercool’. She has already garnered support from numerous outlets, including Vice Noisey, Wonderland and Clash Magazine.
Opening track ‘How Does That Make You Feel’ instantly draws you in, thanks to Ariana’s wispy falsetto vocal. The track develops into a brooding anthem, full of atmospheric synths and provides the perfect introduction to the rest of Retrograde.
Next up is ‘Love You Lately’, Ariana’s collaboration with electro-RnB duo RKCB. The track is full of slick vocals, and a glitchy, looping night-time synth. It’s a different sound to what we’ve come to expect from Ariana, however, it shows her progression as an artist and her ability to try new musical directions.
‘These Ruins’ is a haunting offering, with Ariana’s vocal surrounded by ethereal instrumentation. As the track progresses, it builds into a powerful crescendo which is pleasing to the ear.
To round off Retrograde, there’s ‘Supercool’, which tells the story of a seemingly confident and self-assured night-cat, whose party girl lifestyle may not be all that glitters. The song is tinted with electro beats and synths, and rounds off the EP in a perfect manner.
Speaking about the EP, Ariana said: “This EP marks the end of a period of my life that most literally felt like it was in retrograde,” says Ariana. “Each track encapsulates these moments over the last year or so where I was really defining myself personally and artistically and the music is a sonic exploration of that growth and ultimately personal transformation.”

Ariana and the Rose has showcased her creativity throughout the EP, and also embraces this on a visual scale. She has been curating her own interactive performances called Light + Space for a while now, transcending the traditional boundaries of a concert. We can expect more Light + Space events from Ariana later this year.
