Amaia Romero is a Spanish singer from Pamplona, Navarre, who has had an interest in music throughout her life. She is currently studying for a degree in piano.
Amaia is no stranger to talent contests, having appeared on the children’s talent show Cántame una canción at the age of eleven. Two years later she went on to participate in the first series of El Número Uno, making it through to the sixth week of the competition.
Last year, Amaia auditioned for the ninth series of Operación Triunfo and it was third time lucky for the Spanish singer when she made it into the Academy alongside fifteen other hopefuls. Each week the contestants performed at a gala, either performing solo, as a duet or a trio. In the third gala, Amaia performed La La Land’s famous “City of Stars” alongside Alfred Garcia and together they won the hearts of the nation.
At the end of January, the final five contestants each performed a variety of songs in Gala Eurovisión in the hopes of representing Spain at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Amaia and Alfred dueted once again with the song “Tu canción” winning the honour of representing Spain with 43% of the vote. They will be off to Lisbon in May to perform in the grand final.
The contest was not over there though, with the final gala of the competition taking place a week later. Amaia performed “Miedo” and “Starman” and went on to win Operación Triunfo 2018 with 46% of the final vote.
