Ari Ólafsson is a classically trained singer from Iceland who grew up in Reykjavik but also spent some of his childhood living in Florida. He has performed in various musicals at the National Theatre of Iceland including the lead role in Oliver! when he was just eleven years old.
In 2015, Ari auditioned for the Icelandic version of The Voice singing Sam Smith’s hit song “Lay Me Down”. The singer’s audition impressed Helgi Björnsson who turned for Ari and in turn gained him as a team member. In the battle round, Ari was pit against Christopher Ólafsson in a stunning battle, with Helgi selecting Christopher to carry on in the competition
Last year, Ari participated in Iceland’s national selection to find a representative for the Eurovision Song Contest (Söngvakeppnin) as a backing singer.
Earlier this year, Ari participated in Söngvakeppnin again, this time as an artist vying to win the competition. His performance of “Our Choice” impressed the juries and the viewing public and he went on to win the competition and the right to represent Iceland at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Ari will perform “Our Choice” in the first semi-final in Lisbon.
Later this year, after his Eurovision performance, the singer will continue his studies after being accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London with a full scholarship.
