Well, this is a name we haven’t typed up in years. Basshunter announced today that he’s got a brand new single being dropped next week, titled “Masterpiece”. He’s been touring all over the UK for the past few years, hitting the occasional news headline. This is his first single release in five years following 2013’s fan-favourite “Ellinor”.
Basshunter, real name Jonas Altberg, is a Swedish DJ superstar who first hit it big in Europe with the Swedish song “Boten Anna” and with the follow-up “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” before transforming both songs into English versions titled “Now You’re Gone” and “All I Ever Wanted”. The former hit the UK Charts hard, peaking at number one and becoming a club hit around Europe, the latter almost followed suit but peaked at number two. His debut UK album also became a hit, charting at number one on the UK Albums Chart, it is officially his second studio album following “LOL <(^^,)>” which was available in most countries, charting globally. He continued to release new music including “Angel In The Night”, “Every Morning”, and “Saturday”, which all charted in the UK Top 40. Two more studio albums followed, “Bass Generation” and “Calling Time”. He was also known for his music videos as they continued a storyline starring Lucas Thorheim and Aylar Lie as well as Basshunter, himself; however, his later music videos stopped all narrative, with the exception of “Northern Line”.
We can’t believe it’s been five years since Basshunter has released new music. During his time in the limelight, he did appear on TV shows. In 2010, the British public saw him on the seventh series of Celebrity Big Brother, where he came fourth; he followed that up with an appearance on The Weakest Link, and the Swedish show Fångarna på fortet. He’s been touring all around the UK and Sweden the last few years, occasionally hitting news when performing at clubs in small towns as well as the one Plymouth date in December 2017, when two teenagers died after taking MDMA.
Now that you’re all caught up with Basshunter news, it’s time to look into this so-called “Masterpiece” snippet of a track that he has teased. The opening lines state, “Only you can hear me summoner, what masterpiece shall we play today?” which is a direct link to the world-renowned online gaming platform, League of Legends, who has a character named DJ Sona that says this exact line.
As far as we can tell, the song is going to link in with League of Legends, making us all think back to “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” (“We’re sitting here in Ventrilo, playing some DotA” in English) as “DotA” is short for “Defence of the Ancients”, which is another online multiplayer battle game. Does this mean that this new “Masterpiece” will be similar to his second single release? We’re not sure, especially since the beats in the short snippet is encapturing the house music of today.
We’re so excited to hear this track and to see how five years away from the music industry has shaped this new release from Basshunter, will it be just as amazing as Lolly’s comeback after 18 years? Or will it not live up to his previous hits? Time will tell, and we’ve only got one week to go until “Masterpiece” is released, as the video states that the song will drop on 19 October 2018.
