Serving groovy alternative pop at its best is Belot with her brand-new single “Cool Whip” which delves into how receiving gifts could in fact be suggestive of wrong-doings in a relationship. Her ability to take that and craft it into this awesome song goes to show her amazing artistry. This follows up last year’s sophomore EP, titled “Harmless Fun”.
Belot, real name Maya Belot, is a North London-born singer-songwriter who is obsessed with pop music, so it’s not a surprise that she has followed her passion by rising up the pop music industry. At the age of 8, she started to learn to play the guitar and by the age of 12, she started using a laptop and recording her music, using Logic. Building up her career at a young age, she enrolled in the Brit School at 14 years old, which allowed her to grow as an artist and follow a direction leading to her iconic unique style of pop music that we hear from her now. She dropped her debut single “Familiar” in April 2020 – which is her most-streamed single on Spotify, to date, with 2.9 million streams – and after a few more singles, she dropped her debut EP “Electric Blue”, a few months later. Roll on a couple more years and she released her sophomore EP “Harmless Fun”, to critical acclaim. She’s starting her 2023 era with a bang, and “Cool Whip” is certainly that.
Written by Alice Ivy, Ben Wylen, and Maya Belot, while it was produced by Max Margolis and Maya Belot, “Cool Whip” is an addictive alternative pop song that uses a unique beat to really allow it to stand out. The track uses bright, textual tones to enhance Belot’s incredible vocals, leading to a captivating sound that is sure to make an impact on all of its listeners. Belot doesn’t shy away from mixing up typical pop music with various different undertones creating what many describe as awkward pop, which is what makes Belot so unique in the best possible way – we’re sure she’s bound to go viral in the coming years with awesome tracks like this one. The unforgettable twisty melody only adds to the honest lyrics that clearly describe how receiving gifts in a relationship could very well be them sugar-coating an issue or a wrong-doing on their part, and that she doesn’t believe that they just wanted to give her a random gift – and we don’t blame her.
Talking about the track, Belot said: “‘Cool Whip’ is about being in a relationship with someone who initially seems caring and extremely generous, but down the line you come to realise that every gift and or kind gesture was a cover up for yet another affair or slip up. I’ve had a few friends over the years that eventually discovered spontaneous flowers could also be red flags. So I always thought it would be interesting to write about the sort of dynamic, where the nicer the gift, the worse the crime.”
