Beth Ditto unveils new clothing range

Beth Ditto, best known for being the lead singer of Gossip, has launched a new plus-size clothing range at Selfridges.

Designed to encourage women to love and celebrate their bodies, the ‘Standing in the Way of Control’ singer describes the size 18-32 range as “Uncompromising, unapologetic, and timeless. Go-to pieces designed to last. A movement by us, for us.”

A statement on her website reads, “I wanted to make pieces to last years. Beyond trends, beyond chain stores. I wanted to create something all its own, something just for us, made with love and consideration. Made ethically in the USA as a small company with no corporate input.”

Ahead of the launch, Beth spoke to the Sunday Times Style Magazine about the need for women to learn to accept their shape. “Women don’t want to stay fat, but the truth is for the majority of us is, we will. And there needs to be a collection that’s without apology – not just accepting that we are fat but that that’s okay. You can still take care of your body and be fat.’ she said.

This is Beth’s first stand-alone collection, after collaborating with Evans back in 2009. The 11 piece collection boasts colourful prints, and a variety of garments including jumpsuits, dresses and a denim jacket.

Beth’s collection was inspired after being left dissatisfied at the range of plus-size clothing offered by other high-street retailers. In a recent interview with Vogue, Beth said, “there’s no real thought about the pattern—like, what could you make for a body like mine. I don’t think there are a lot of plus-sized people behind it, and I don’t think that’s fair.”

The range campaign features well-known plus size models Barbie Ferreira and Philomena Kwao, as well as Beth herself. Beth enlisted the help of ‘Love’ magazine editor and friend Katie Grand to create the look book shoot.

It’s great to see a celebrity so comfortable in her own skin, you go Beth! You can find Beth’s range at Selfridges or online at BethDitto.com.
