Fifth Harmony (Camila Cabello, Normani Kordei Hamilton, Lauren Jauregui, Allyson Brooke Hernandez and Dinah Jane Hansen) were just a few of the women who were honoured with an award at Billboard’s Women in Music event, which took place Dec. 11 in New York and aired Dec. 18 and was aired on the Lifetime channel.
Before receiving their award for Group of the Year, actress Hailee Steinfeld introduced Fifth Harmony, and the ladies sang an acoustic medley of songs which included their hit single “Worth It,” followed by Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women” and Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family.”
After their performance, the group began thanking the crowd, explaining how honored they were to be there.
“Thank you to our fans for continuously voting for us, supporting us, waking up at 6a.m. waiting at any show that we possibly have. We love you guys so so much and yes, power to the women. We love you, and we’re so powerful together, so thank you,” said Normani.
This is the first time Group of the Year has been given out at the Billboard Women in Music event, and these talented ladies won the award because they fit the group dynamic for Billboard which consists of five women with a strong, united voice and a commitment to celebrating female empowerment.
“In the few short years since they formed on The X Factor this diverse group of women has managed to make chart-topping music, develop a legion of passionate fans around the world and use their platform to promote self-esteem. They do it all so well, the very definition of a ‘Group of the Year,” Janice Min, co-president and chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media’s Entertainment Group, said to Billboard.
There’s no shocker to why Fifth Harmony won Group of the Year, especially with their debut album Reflection hitting number 5 on the Billboard 200!
Some of the other winners of the night included Lady Gaga who was honored as this year’s Woman of the Year, Selena Gomez who was honored as this year’s Chart-Topper, Tori Kelly who was honored as this year’s Breakthrough, and Demi Lovato who was honored as this year’s Rulebreaker.
