Captain America is quite an iconic character to many Marvel fans. This year, Marvel is going to be celebrating 75 years of the hero by unveiling a 13 foot tall bronze statue of him at Comic Con in San Diego.
After Comic Con is over, the statue is going to be taken to Captain America aka Steve Rogers’ hometown, Brooklyn, for a ceremony dedicated entirely to him in early August.
“For the past 75 years, Captain America has inspired generations of fans serving as the ultimate global icon for freedom, strength and doing the right thing,” stated Paul Gitter, who is the senior vice president of licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.
Marvel showed fans a sketch of the statue’s final design, check it out:
A quote from Captain America: The First Avenger has been engraved onto the statue which reads: “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”
The pose of the hero was specifically showcased in such a symbolic way as it “showcase[s] the impressive strength of Captain America and his stoic form,” Gitter told USA Today. “Captain America’s signature shield also takes prominence, paying homage to his heroism, indestructible power and determination.”
Marvel will also take to their social media accounts to let fans know where the statue is going to be located during Comic Con which is happening this month (20-24th).
Limited edition 12 inch bronze and 35 inch pewter replicas of the statue will also be available for fans to obtain and take home with them.
“We hope that when fans see the statue, they will think back to a favourite comic book, treasured action figure or even be transported back to a special time and place in their lives where Captain America’s values played influence,” Gitter said.
Captain America has long been a huge character in the Marvel Universe since being created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941.
He is currently played by Chris Evans who has portrayed the patriotic hero very well according to the love and appreciation he has received from fans. He is currently feuding with Ironman in Captain America: Civil War which has so far topped this year’s box office.
