It’s that time again! Time for day eleven of our Christmas Film Advent! Today’s film is the 2004 holiday classic Christmas with the Kranks! The movie stars the brilliant Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Aykroyd.
The movie tells the story of a couple who decide to skip Christmas for a year to go on a cruise. Their daughter is out of the country working for the Peace Corp, so they decide that they want a break from all the hustle and bustle that Christmas brings. To their dismay, they unintentionally offend their neighbors and community when they refuse to buy a Christmas tree from a boy scout, refuse to donate to the police charity, refuse to put their huge blow-up Frosty on the roof, and refuse to host their annual Christmas Eve party.
Things take a turn for the worse when the Krank’s daughter calls them on Christmas Eve morning from the airport saying she and her new fiancé will be home in several hours to celebrate Christmas with them. Mrs. Krank, not wanting to disappoint her daughter, told her that they were still having the huge Christmas Eve party. This leaves the Kranks unable to go on their cruise they had planned and it forces them to make amends with the community. They need their neighbor’s help if they’re going to pull this off!
Christmas with the Kranks is a brilliantly funny holiday movie. It pokes fun at some of the more ridiculous things about the holidays, but makes you realize that all of the crazy things that happen surrounding Christmas are worthwhile because they all lead to you getting to spend time with friends and family. Christmas with the Kranks also helps you to see that family isn’t just people who share the same genes as you—but rather your whole community is your family.
This movie is a great choice to watch today, or any day between now and Christmas! You’ll laugh, you’ll reflect, and you’ll see Christmas as the sentimental and beautiful holiday that it is. I hope you enjoy it!
