Stars live lives that most of us yearn for. The fame, the wealth, and the nice vacations; who nowadays would not want that? There are some who like to spend big, but we are not going to mention names. On the other hand, there are those who have decided to use their fame and power to help save the earth.
Climate change should be a major concern for everyone. The best thing that you and I can do is help save the earth by going green. It’s one of the ideas behind the birth of hydroponic systems.
The Top Celebrities you can Count on Today
Here is a look at some celebrities who have decided to go the green way by using their fame and influence to save the planet.
1. Leonardo DiCaprio
You might know him from famous movies such as the Titanic, Inception, and Romeo and Juliet, but there is one thing you may not know about this celebrity. DiCaprio is an environmental philanthropist. He is one of the few stars who is concerned about taking care of the earth.
He founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 in order to support organizations and initiatives that have plans to create a sustainable environment. Since the foundation was formed, DiCaprio has been at the forefront, fighting environmental challenges. For instance, his foundation raised $40 million during a charity event in Saint Tropez.
He is currently part of environmental organizations such as Global Green USA, International Fund, and World Wildlife Fund. He has been especially active in WWF, by donating a million dollars to help save the tigers from extinction and better their habitats.
DiCaprio also used his skills as a filmmaker to produce the award-winning movie, the 11th Hour. The film was aimed to educate the public about the Earth’s challenges and solutions to those problems.
2. Akon
Akon is an award-winning songwriter and rapper. You might know him from his hit songs, Hold My Hand, Lonely, Don’t Matter, and Smack That. However, there is another side of the singer which you might not know. Akon comes from Senegal, and he decided to do something for his African people. He was raised in Africa until the age of seven, when he moved to the US. He grew up in a town in Senegal which had no electricity. Therefore, from first-hand experience, he decided to give Africans the gift of power.
Akon founded the Akon Lighting Africa Foundation, which was launched in February 2015. He partnered with his childhood friend, and together they started installing solar solutions to 14 countries in Africa. The countries which have benefited from this initiative are Senegal, Niger, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Guinea Equatorial, Gabon, DRC, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Mali.
Solektra, which is the company providing the solar solutions, aims at providing electricity to areas with no access to power at all. The project has helped various schools, health centers, and households. There are plans to launch Solektra in other countries too, such as Brazil and India.
3. Daryl Hannah
Daryl Hannah is one of the few celebrities who lives by what she advocates. You might know her from blockbusters such as Kill Bill and Splash.
Her love for the environment has made her go green. Thus, her car runs on vegetable oil collected from fast food restaurants like McDonald’s and Burgerking. Hannah takes her love for the earth to the extremes. Did you know she has 15 chickens which provide her with eggs every morning? If you are still in awe, then know that that is in light the vegetarian life she has lived for the last thirty years.
Daryl Hannah has been involved in some activist campaigns, like the protest to save the South Central Los Angeles farm. She was arrested with other activists, of which were Julia Butterfly Hill and Joan Baez. However, you can’t blame her; the South Central Farm is one of the biggest food producers in the city. Hannah has stood firm for her campaigns, and they are paying off. She even had the support of President Obama during the Keystone XL pipeline in 2015.
4. Ian Somerhalder
Damon Salvatore. Does that name sound familiar? If you are a fan of Vampire Diaries, then Ian Somerhalder should be a common face on your screen. He might be the sleek vampire to you, but he is an environmental activist in the real world. (Sorry, vampires aren’t part of the real world.)
In 2010, he was one of the few celebrities who helped clean up the Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Apart from this initiative, he launched the Ian Somerhalder Foundation that same year. He called out to fans with his environmental campaigns, that he garner some sort of a helpinghand.
So what’s the Verdict?
The earth is ours to save and protect. If celebrities are taking part in going green, then what are you waiting for?
