Stand Up To Cancer is a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 which raises money to accelerate ground-breaking cancer research that will save lives.
Designed to give viewers insight into different elements of the campaign, from the science to the showbiz, each film is accompanied by a narrative from the supporting celebrities.
In the first of the series, Olivia Colman takes viewers on a roller coaster ride through the human body as viewers shrink to the size of cells and follow ‘nano-tech drug parcels’ through the body, demonstrating the exciting potential of this experimental new cancer treatment.
In another film, Stephen Fry explores the history of cancer, from its earliest known instances in dinosaurs to recent scientific breakthroughs in treatments that are saving lives.
In the final film, a host of stars including Chris Smalling; Greg Rutherford; Alexa Chung; Tanni Grey-Thompson; Jamie Laing; Amy-Leigh Hickman; Danny Dyer; Kimberley Wyatt; Jo Brand; Jim Chapman; Madeleine Mantock and Jason Manford, compete to be the viewer’s plus one for the Stand Up To Cancer live show extravaganza in October.

Stephen Fry, who was treated for prostate cancer earlier this year, said: “I’ve always believed that history matters greatly. The past illuminates the present. The history of cancer is a pivotal and fascinating story. These wonderful films for Stand Up To Cancer lay that past bare, taboos and all, and stand testimony to the huge strides humans have made in beating this horrible disease.
“As clichéd as it sounds I always believed cancer is what happens to other people, not what happens to you. Fortunately, I have been able to experience first-hand the sophistication of modern-day cancer treatment through what is referred to, rather alarmingly, as a ‘robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy’. We don’t have to understand the technology, only celebrate how it is being harnessed today to treat cancer in ever more effective ways.”
Danny Dyer, who took part in the third film, said “I lost my old grandad to cancer a few years ago, he was a top geezer and seeing him go through that broke my heart. Having it happen to someone you love changes your thinking completely and I’m just hoping we can make some kind of difference with these films for Stand Up To Cancer.”
