The Chainsmokers and Halsey continue their chart domination today as they secure their first ever UK number one with ‘Closer’.

They ended Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and MØ’s five-week run at number one, with a total of 80,000 combined sales. ‘Closer’ is already riding high at the top of the charts in both Australia and the United States.

Of the news, The Chainsmokers told OfficialCharts.com: “Well this is awesome ’cause I (Alex) have a lot of family in the UK that don’t have a clue what I have been doing for the last 10 years so this will make waves during the holidays this year.

“But in all seriousness this is an amazing achievement for us. We are beyond grateful at all the support from our UK fans and radio stations; as a relatively new artist, it means a lot to us and gives us a lot of confidence in the music we have coming up!”

Despite being 37 weeks into the year, ‘Closer’ is only the eighth different number one of 2016. Justin Bieber kicked off 2016 with three weeks at the top with ‘Love Yourself’, before being knocked off by fellow Canadian Shawn Mendes and his song ‘Stitches’.

Zayn later debuted at number one with ‘Pillowtalk’ in February before being followed by Lukas Graham’s ‘7 Years’ and Mike Posner’s ‘I Took A Pill In Ibiza’, spending five and four weeks at the top respectively.

In April, Drake claimed his first UK number one with ‘One Dance’ and remained at the top for a mammoth 15 weeks before being toppled by Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and MØ’s ‘Cold Water’.

We will have to see how many weeks The Chainsmokers and Halsey can hold on for, and who will be mighty enough to oust them from the top spot!
