Folk-pop/rock singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dan Rauchwerk introduces his new single, “The Camel’s Back,” a song exploring the universal experience of failure and finding the resolve to persevere.
“The Camel’s Back” follows on the heels of Rauchwerk’s previous single, “Only January Knows,” a slower, drifting tune. Whereas on “The Camel’s Back,” with its more upbeat melody, Rauchwerk delves into that moment, where, like the straw that broke the camel’s back, everything falls apart.
The lyrics acknowledge the desperate, sinking feeling we’ve all experienced.
“While you stumble down the sidewalk, pretending that you’re sane / The mask, it seems to hold up well, at least until it starts to rain / Each falling raindrop hits you, and the facade comes tumbling down / and you’re standing there on Saint Marks crying / Wondering if God can see you now”
Rauchwerk’s musical journey is nothing short of remarkable. He spent the first decade of his career touring the country alongside his brother Noah as the folk duo, The Lords of Liechtenstein. Their captivating performances graced the stage of NPR’s ‘Mountain Stage,’ and they released four critically acclaimed albums during their time together.
In 2018, Rauchwerk embarked on a solo career with the release of his debut album, We Are More Than What We Leave Behind. This album, inspired by books and true stories from history, showcased Dan’s unique ability to craft music that not only entertains but also educates. His profound knowledge and musical prowess earned him the nickname “musical Wikipedia.”
“The Camel’s Back” opens on trickling tones flowing into a finessed rhythm topped by layers of banjo and electric guitar, giving the tune a delicious folk-rock flavor. Rauchwerk’s vocals conjure up suggestions of Bob Dylan crossed with Howard Kaylan, at once evocative and lusciously raspy. Ebbing and rising, on the chorus, his voice takes on intense growling textures.
Dan Rauchwerk has it going on! With “The Camel’s Back,” he displays his gift for intimate songwriting and his outstanding voice.
