This Wednesday is set to mark an incredible, impressive milestone for pop sensation Demi Lovato. The Heart Attack hit-maker shall be celebrating five years of sobriety this week, which truly is remarkable and shows just how far Demi has come.
At the Kids Choice Awards on Saturday, Demi told Entertainment Tonight, “it feels amazing!”
“All I’ve been doing is focusing on bettering myself. And it’s been quite the journey, but it’s well worth it.”
Demi admitted to using drugs and alcohol as a form of self-medication back in 2011, when she was battling with self harm, bullying and bulimia. The two helped to “numb her pain” whilst she faced many struggles on a daily basis, as well as occupying bipolar disorder. Speaking about that dark period in her life, Demi said that the most important part of recovery is surrendering.
“Surrendering is the most important thing whenever you’re trying to battle your demons…You have to admit that you have a problem first, and then you can overcome them.”
Prior to getting sober, Demi described herself as a “nightmare to work with” due to her careless attitude and desire to just always do whatever she wanted.
Demi has well and truly turned her life around, though, and is now living, breathing proof that recovery is possible, despite what your mental illness and your demons try to tell you. The twenty four year old has been admitted to rehab twice and has since managed to get things back on track, explaining that, now “my life is in a really good place.”
Since deciding to be so beautifully open and honest about the battles she faced as a youngster, Demi has become a real advocate for mental health, raising awareness as well as dispelling myths and stigmas that surround mental illnesses.
Demi has recently been spending countless hours in the studio, working on her yet to be named sixth album and, in true Demi Lovato style, has been teasing her Lovatics on Twitter about her upcoming music. Oh Demi, what are you trying to do to us?
