Half Crown are a five-piece band from Brighton. Made up of Louie (Front Man and Lyricist), David (Vocals and Guitar), Frankie (Vocals and Guitar), Charles (Bass and Trumpet) and Josh (Drums), Half Crown have been making waves on the live scene across London, Brighton and the South.
Having built a loyal fanbase over the past two years, Half Crown recently launched a PledgeMusic campaign which hit 75% of its target within the first 48 hours. At the end of the campaign, the band surpassed their goal, reaching 138%. This allowed the fiercely independent band to record, produce and distribute their explosive double A-side single on their own terms.
‘Start It Up’ is part one of said double A-side, and it truly packs a punch. On the surface, it’s an indie-rock offering however, there’s also a dose of rap in the middle which gives the track a different edge. The band is influenced by artists such as Alex Turner, David Bowie, Bee Gees and Andre 3000, and you can hear a nod to each throughout the track.
As described on their Soundcloud, “lyrically the song is fueled by momentum, it’s an echo of our generation and the cultural, constant desire for more.” The track was produced by Jez Coad, protégé of Bob Clearmountain (The Rolling Stone, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen), who was able to draw from his years of experience to help the band perfect a bold recording.
‘Start It Up’ has the potential to sound epic live, and Half Crown are well known for their live shows. The band have performed at Blissfields and also supported Rizzle Kicks and The Correspondents in Brighton.
As well as selling out their own home shows, they were recently invited to play a one off Virgin festival at Sir Richard Branson’s private residence in Oxford. Virgin Entertainment were so enamoured by the band, that they’ve been invited to play an exclusive show at Virgin HQ early next year.
Half Crown have an LA tour planned for 2017 as well as even more new material. It’s safe to say that the only way is up for this Brighton band.
