Tara Priya was born in San Francisco to a Persian mother and an Indian father. She was trained in opera and jazz voice from the age of eleven, and after two years at Columbia University, she left New York for Los Angeles. There, she earned recording time for her RnB/Soul music by singing hooks on rap demos in underground hip-hop studios.
Indie tastemaker P-Vine Records (The Roots, Chet Faker) discovered her first self-release in a record shop in Japan, and after a proper release in Japan, it debuted at #2 on iTunes and #6 on the Billboard Japan airplay charts.
At this point, Tara started working with London producer Steve Booker (Jessie J, John Newman). She moved to London in 2014, where she worked on her EP Friends Like These, that was released in 2015. On Friends Like These, Tara worked with Jimmy Logic, Joe Garrett (Zayn Malik), and Ragz Originale (Krept & Konan).
Friends Like These is an impressive combination of jazz, soul, and 90’s hip-hop. With her original sound, Tara managed to impress the likes of Tom Robinson (6Music), Yasser (BBC Radio 1Xtra), and Jamie Cullum (Radio 2).
The follow-up single to Friends Like These is “Fascinate Ya”, set to release on December 9th. The track can’t be described as anything other than lush. It features sultry vocals, hip-hop soaked drums and icy synths and yes, it does fascinate us.
