If you don’t love DNCE then you probably don’t want to pick up the latest issue of the British-based photography magazine, CLIENT. But let’s face it, who doesn’t love DNCE? They are the funky new band who bought you the hits, “Cake By The Ocean,” and, “Toothbrush,” which are also known as those two songs that have been absolutely everywhere since their release.
Somewhere between releasing their newest single, “Body Moves,” promoting their self-titled debut album, touring the world and just generally being awesome, DNCE have found the time to shoot a twenty-eight page spread in the unconventional magazine and let’s just say that we are still trying to pick our jaws up from the floor after seeing the pictures. The band consists of members Joe Jonas, Jack Lawless, JinJoo Lee and Cole Whittle and after their incredible success over the past year, it’s not hard to see why they were chosen to cover Issue 16 of the publication.
We’re going to make you wait a bit longer to see the pictures of the band while you read a preview of their exclusive interview with the magazine:
How long have you guys known each other? Joe: “We’ve known each other for a while. Jack and JinJoo I’ve known for about ten years and we have toured on and off together and Jack and I lived together at one point. Cole kind of fell into our lives at the perfect time. We met him early last year and we were trying to figure out why we’d just met him, we kind of felt like he was a long-lost brother and quickly we all became a family.”
DNCE is far from just a “dance” band, can you define your style? Cole: “I think our style is kind of like a 70’s disco-funk band that woke up one morning in a garage in the 90’s and started a garage band but we still play the synth.”
There is a huge amount of sexual energy from the band when you perform which resonates in some of your tracks too, where does this come from? Joe: “I think it comes from our minds and we want to make people feel like they’re in their bedroom when they’re at our shows. They can be as crazy and as sexual as they want to be and that’s what it’s about for us. We want to let people have those feelings that you feel when you’re alone.”
JinJoo, you are so fierce. To relax, what does the real JinJoo get up to? JinJoo: “The real me is on the stage all the time. Even off stage, I am all about being confident and being myself. To relax I just chill with my dog.”
Joe, you were full of energy on the shoot so where does your fire come from? Joe: “A lot of coffee! When you really love what you do, it’s fun ultimately. I think that goes for any career or path you take, we just happen to be doing music. If we have long days or early mornings or long travel days, it all makes up for it when we’re on stage. We always look at our schedule and think, ‘we have a long day ahead’, but we get to go on stage and then the whole day is totally worth it.”
Jack, how do you contain your sanity and keep your feet on the ground? Jack: “Well when I’m on tour, I like to remind myself that I am very lucky to be there. I appreciate it all. You’ve got to have fun and not take yourself too seriously because you could go crazy if you’re on tour for so long.”
If you could create a hall of fame of artists throughout the decades, list three each who have inspired you since you fell in love with music. Joe: “I would say the Bee Gees, The Beatles, and Elvis Presley. I’ve always loved the Bee Gees and their harmonies, Elvis had an amazing swagger and incredible moves and his voice is so iconic. The Beatles are one of the biggest bands of all time and they may now have had the craziest or longest career but they still wrote so many songs and did so well. They continue to inspire me because of how ahead of their time they were.”
Cole: “John Coltrane, Iggy Pop and Dolly Parton because they are all blazing hot alien innovators.”
JinJoo: “James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Earth Wind & Fire because they can be super RnB and moody and they can be crazy on stage. I go out of my mind when I’m watching them.”
