Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer Emily Brooks unveils her new single/music video, “State of Mind,” an exploration of the concept of nirvana, a state often associated with perfect peace, liberation, and enlightenment.
Emily explains, “I believe parts of ourselves have to die in order for us to truly live. Nothing is gone forever, but we can find ways to redirect our energy. This song was created to transcend and reconnect you to your truest form. The verses resonate with our ego, the chorus is a mantra, and the bridge embodies the essence of our highest self.”
Incorporating elements of Eastern philosophy, “State of Mind” echoes the teachings of Buddhism, where nirvana represents the ultimate goal of transcending suffering and ending the cycle of rebirth. “State of Mind” serves as a poignant reminder that true happiness lies within and through spiritual practices like yoga and meditation, we can transcend beyond our individual identity, leading to a more harmonious and interconnected existence.
Blending low-slung waves of indie-rock with hints of grunge and dream-pop, “State of Mind” rolls out on a soft guitar topped by Emily’s dreamy, almost ethereal vocals. When the rhythm enters, the melody takes on darker, mysterious tones, adding a moody potency to the harmonics. Emily’s voice expands, mounting on drifting filaments, giving the lyrics a delicious field of resonant timbres.
“It’s all a state of mind / Nothing can change me / Here I’ll stay / Nothing can change me / Right here I’ll stay / Riding a wave.”
The video, directed by Dave Lang, depicts the interplay of shadows and light, hazy textures, and the symbolic presence of water, the element of love, peace, purification, and healing.
Gliding and floating yet dipped in alluring indie-rock energy, “State of Mind” reveals the songwriting and vocal gifts of Emily Brooks.
