Emily Warren is the mastermind responsible for penning some of our favorite hits to date, from The Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” to Dua Lipa’s “New Rules.” But, the successful Grammy-winning, multi-platinum singer-songwriter is beginning to take the industry by storm as she goes from the genius behind-the-scenes to joining the limelight as a lead artist.
Last week, Warren dropped the follow-up to her very first single “Hurt By You,” which was released back in May. The latest from the 24-year-old, “Something To Hold On To,” is an emotional ballad with a birth so natural.
“At the time, I was dealing with a lot of anxiety,” Warren explained while reminiscing on how the track came to life. “And, watching my boyfriend smoke cigarettes when I felt like he was the one tangible thing in my life that I could rely on and hold on to, was something that hit me pretty heavy.”
“You put your lips to nicotine and say it’s just the one/ But nicotine don’t care about your lungs/ Your squeeze my hand/ You say it’s fine/ It’s only when you’re drunk/ I wish I’d just let you do what you want,” she croons.
“Something to Hold on To” radiates an authenticity so pure and undeniably raw. The lyrics demonstrate the hidden pain of watching someone you love put their own life at risk without thought. Warren’s haunting words are accompanied by stunning piano melodies, soon joined by captivating strings and a stern drumbeat.
While her debut EP is due out later this year, the songstress also continues to work with some of music’s biggest names, including David Guetta, Nick Jonas, G-Easy, Sean Paul, Charli XCX, Camila Cabello and Hailee Steinfeld.
