Last month, the casting for the new play, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, was revealed. Jamie Parker, Paul Thornley and Noma Dumezweni were announced as the adult Harry, Ron and Hermione.
Many fans were overjoyed at the casting announcement, as their wish for more diversity in the series was granted. However, there was also some strong debate over black actress Noma being cast as Hermione, as the character has been portrayed as white in the films.
Emma Watson, who plays Hermione in the film series, has remained silent on the matter until now. However, she has since tweeted her support to Noma, saying that she can’t wait to see her portrayal of Hermione on stage.
Can't wait to see Noma Dumezweni as Hermione on stage this year. ?????????????????????????? #harrypotterandthecursedchild #2016

J.K. Rowling, the author of the worldwide phenomenon series, previously showed her support and stated that Hermione’s skin colour was never specified in the books.
Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione ? https://t.co/5fKX4InjTH

With the support of both Emma Watson and J.K. Rowling, we’re sure that Noma will thrive even more when she takes on the role of Hermione later this year. We can’t wait to see her portrayal of the famous character!
Harry Potter and The Cursed Child opens from May 2016.
