J & The Rest are the result of a series of happy musical coincidences. Their front-man Jamal was raised in a very musical family, but had never really considered a career as a singer. He instead studied music tech at Leeds Met, but he decided to leave the course feeling that the path was not what he expected. However, his mate invited him in to the studio one day to jam, during his time at the studio he met their uni mates John and Louis. The three guys clicked musically instantly. With their friend from the live circuit Ricky joining them on drums, J & The Rest were born.
Now the four-piece have released their debut EP ‘4 AM Again’. The record contains four brand new original tracks which really showcase J & The Rest’s raw talent.
Their debut release has fantastic production, and catchy lyrics, while Jamal’s vocals are smooth and bouncy.
The vibe on the title track ‘4AM’ is something similar to what you would expect from the likes of Omi and Reggie ‘N’ Bollie. It’s bouncy, summery and super fun.
‘All Clear’ shows another side the rising star’s. It’s more stripped back with thought-provoking lyrics, but still manages to keep a foot-tapping pop production.
‘Kisses On The Mirror’ has a super funky production, and Jamal’s falsetto is insane. It’s reminiscent of a Nick Jonas track and is the standout on the EP.
‘Weary Love’ has the same ingredients as the other songs on ‘4AM Again’ but it has much more of a ballad feel, and is rather beautiful. It showcases the depth that J & The Rest possess.
RATING: 4/5.
