Need something new to check out on Netflix? How about the newly released teen-romantic comedy, The Last Summer, starring K.J. Apa and Maia Mitchell? Co-leading is a budding actress, Audrey Grace Marshall who stars as “Lilah.” With this movie along with Jessica Jones under her belt, Audrey is racking up amazing roles at such an early age. We were excited to chat with Audrey to discuss her character’s role and her future goals.
Thanks so much for taking some time out to chat. Before we dive into your current projects, can you tell us what made you pursue a career as an actress?
Well, I was a shy kid, like really, really shy. My mom and dad wanted me to do something that would bring me out of my shell. At the time, Disney’s Liv and Maddie was my favorite show, and I wanted to be like Dove Cameron. So when my parents were suggesting dance and gymnastics, I suggested acting. For some reason, I’m not shy auditioning and acting in front of the camera. I feel really happy and good when I’m acting like I’m exactly where I should be.
What actors do you look up or inspire you?
I love Millie Bobby Brown. She’s incredible and definitely inspires me. She started out young too and I really admire that.
Huge congrats on your upcoming film The Last Summer! It includes such an amazing cast. First off, how did the role come about for you?
Thank you! The audition request [was] for the role of Lilah. I got very creative with my audition and had a lot of fun. I felt great about the part. I could see myself as Lilah and I think it showed during my taping.
What was it like working on set with the cast? Was there anything you learned while being on set that you’ll remember going forward?
It was an incredible experience. The cast was great. Everyone got along really well. It was definitely more fun than work. When I am on set, I always like to watch and listen to the other actors and to the director. There is so much you can learn by studying the way they do things. It’s like an acting and directing class, up close. [laughs] I think the thing I remember most is that everyone was really natural and was just being themselves.
Can you tell us a little bit about your character and how she’s involved in the movie?
My character, Lilah, is being pushed into the acting industry by her mom. She doesn’t really know how to stand up for herself and tell her mom how she really feels. All the other characters in the movie are at a similar place in their lives, trying to work through something, and they all cross paths at one point or another during the summer before they leave for college.
What is one person you dream of sharing the big (or little) screen with?
I love Jennifer Lawrence. She’s incredibly talented. I would love to work with her someday.
Is there a specific genre that you’re more fond of over another that you’d like to do more of? If so, what would that be?
I’m definitely more of a dramatic actor. That’s where I do my best work. But those type of roles require a lot of emotional energy and that can take a lot out of you. I think I’d love to do some happy kid friendly type roles too like maybe a Disney movie or something fun like that.
How do you envision your career 5-10 years from now?
I see myself as a successful working actor. I would love to someday be nominated for an Oscar. I think that’s every actor’s ultimate dream.
Being that your upcoming movie is called The Last Summer, what are your plans for this summer?
I really want to spend a lot of time at the beach this summer and travel. I’d love to go to Paris someday, maybe I can talk my mom into taking me this summer. :)
