It can be a very risky decision for an artist to take a classic song and make it their own. However, for Daecolm, it was a decision that well and truly paid off.
Earlier this year, Daecolm decided to record his own version of Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’. The song is an iconic offering which is globally recognised as one of the best songs of all time. But what happens when you spin a cheesy classic on its head and give it a modern day RnB twist? You get an irresistibly smooth jam, that’s what!
As soon as Daecolm uploaded his version of the song, the internet went wild. A VT page on Facebook re-posted the clip, and within 48 hours it had amassed over 21 million views!
Now, Daecolm has recorded a full acoustic version of the song and we’re thrilled to be premiering it today. Recorded live from Tape in London, the acoustic version showcases Daecolm’s voice beautifully and highlights his versatility. It’s hard to believe that such an Europop song can sound so calming and hypnotic!

Speaking about choosing to rework ‘Dancing Queen’, Daecolm told us: “Dancing Queen was just a classic timeless song that was so against the grain of the type of music I do. I thought it would be cool to rendition it with the modern RnB twist really just to see what it sounded like, just pure curiosity of what it would sound like today being done by myself.”
But how on earth does anyone begin reworking such a well-known and well-loved song? He said: “Re-producing the whole track in a more modern way was the goal, how I went about it.. I don’t really know I just started playing some chords that worked well over the original song its self and then it all just happened from there!”
Daecolm has received such a positive response since the track’s release, which he was surprised about. “I thought it was just gonna be a cool little cover for people who are fans of ABBA and also fans of RnB music to appreciate, but I definitely can’t complain at what it has done!” he said.
There is no doubt that Daecolm is destined for success. The singer and producer has already had good support across BBC Radio 1Xtra with plays at Jamz Supernova, Charlie Sloth & DJ Target. As a producer, he has collaborated with the likes of Krept & Konan, Chris Brown, Desiigner, Labrinth, Craig David and Yungen. Additionally, he is one of the executive producers on Elijah Blake’s new album.
