Singer/songwriter Cherri V has just released her brand new single ‘Without You’ which has been produced by Grammy award winning UK producer, Harmony Samuels, who has worked with mega stars including; Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande, and Kelly Rowland.

Here we speak to Cherri V about her latest release, new album, musical inspirations and lots more.

Growing up who inspired you to get into music?
My mum is a singer.. She sings strictly gospel music now but had a few pop/dance releases in the 80s & early 90s under her stage name ‘Alysha Warren’. I think watching her music videos, and watching her rehearse in the mirror inspired me initially. She is a vocal powerhouse and I remember wondering if I could even impress her with my singing but I was painfully shy! She said I was about 5-years-old when I scribbled her a letter explaining my dreams to be a singer just like her lol. So mum it’s your doing!

What is your earliest music memory?
Being encouraged to sing in the church choir by my late great grandmother. She always stressed that there was no room for shyness in church and that I should never hesitate to use my gift. I wasn’t a fan of her forceful hand then lol but so grateful now for the push.

You have talked about your shyness, so what made you want to pursue singing as a career?
My mum gifted me with my first album in a CD.. RnB veteran Brandy’s debut album and saying “Study this”. There is something about the way her voice caresses your ears. Her tone, the magic in her delivery. I just remember thinking how amazing it would be to have that affect on people. I’m a massive fan of Brandy and have been from the beginning of her career. Whitney was a massive inspiration also. I feel like so many people shy away from the reference because of personal rumours but she was such a class act in her prime and it’s hard to match her grace and skill all at once.

What is the main inspiration behind your songs?
My life. I’m such an emotive writer. I draw much inspiration from my own experiences and those around me. I’m the friend that may tell your secrets in a song. I won’t name names though lol.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would you choose?
Kendrick Lamar. [I] Love what he stands for and what he personifies as an artist. I think I’d learn a lot from him.

What songs are you currently listening to?
I have Kendrick Lamar new album ‘Damn’ on repeat! As well as Maroon 5 band member PJ Morton who just released his new album titled ‘Gumbo’.

How would you describe the sound of your new album?
My new album titled ‘Brown Eyed Soul’ would be described as autobiographical soul/RnB.

What do you hope to achieve in the next ten years?
To be the first Cherri who pops up in your search engine on Google lol.
