Jake Katzman recently ended three years on Broadway, where he starred as Young Charlie in the Tony Award winning musical Kinky Boots.
A few days ago, he premiered his new single, called “Things Don’t Mean A Thing,” a song “about showing the real you.” Jake wrote, produced, and played drums and piano on the song. He has two more songs ready to drop soon, along with three forthcoming movies in which he stars: The Luring, Team Marco, and Divided By.
Jake Katzman is 13-years-old, yet has been acting and singing professionally for seven years, starring in Hollywood movies, hit television shows, and on Broadway. As impressive as his résumé is, what’s even more impressive is this: Jake is genuinely unaffected by his fame. He’s funny, relaxed and, most importantly, compassionate.
CelebMix sat down with Jake Katzman to find how he got started in music and acting, as well as to discover the source of his gracious charisma.
How would you describe yourself?
I am passionate about everything I do and willing to try anything. People say I am funny and very loud. Lol. I guess I like to have fun and believe everyone should be kind to each other.
What’s your favorite song to belt out in the car or the shower?
I will sing all the parts of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I crack myself up using different kind of voices singing it. It’s fun! I don’t take myself too seriously all the time.
Who is your favorite music artist?
My favorite artist is Brendon Urie. I got to work with him in Kinky Boots and he was awesome to hangout with. Brendon sings, writes, and plays piano. He is original and mentors me to keep singing and writing no matter what.
How did you get started in music? What’s the backstory there?
Music was always playing in my family. My parents would take me to see my Papa sing in a funk band. Believe it or not Earth Wind & Fire has been one of my favorite bands. I wanted to sing and play instruments from an early age. I was lucky I got to do it on Broadway and Films.
What musicians influenced you the most?
There are so many amazing musicians who influenced me like Prince on guitar, Tommy Lee on drums, and Billy Joel on piano.
What was the inspiration for your new song “Things Don’t Mean A Thing?”
I write what I see in school, society, and social media. The stuff I write about is what I experienced or how I feel. “Things Don’t Mean A Thing” is about showing the real you. Just because you don’t have designer things or do the next fashion trend doesn’t mean you’re less than anyone else. You don’t need expensive things to fit in or be amazing!
You’re also an accomplished actor. How did you get started in acting?
My first acting job was when I was 6 years old. My mom’s friend told her I should get an agent because I was always performing in the food store, mall, and restaurants. The first job I tried out for was Law & Order SVU and I got it. I had everyone doing the Macarena dance between scenes.
How do you balance two demanding careers – acting and music?
I started so young. I guess, I am used to it and I always went to regular school. Music and acting is so much fun and I am lucky I get to do it!
Of the TV and film roles you’ve played so far, which is your favorite? And why?
All of the films and TV shows I have been in have special meaning to me! However, if I had to choose one specifically, The Wilde Wedding film I got to work with Legends! Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Minnie Driver. I even got to sing in the movie. I learned so much and had a blast with the whole cast. I’m also excited that I have two films coming out soon: Team Marco and Divided By.
What’s next for you musically?
Musically I have two new songs that will be releasing soon: “Shut It Down” and “Flow.” I will continue creating music that is true to me and that will be inspiring.
