Josephina is a rising alt-pop singer based in Los Angeles, CA. She grew up in Virginia Beach, and was raised by a Cuban mother and British father and discovered her passion and love for music at a young age. When aged 16 she took her singing talents to social media, partly inspired by a previous fascination with YouTube cover artists. A short time after she’d begun posting her covers of tracks by artists such Frank Ocean and Foster the People, the singer/songwriter had gained a large following, and eventually earned the attention of management and production companies across the country.
And now her six-track debut EP, which combines her playful lyricism with an electro-pop sensibility, is due for release early next year! Her debut single ‘Woosah’ is out now.
Here we speak exclusively to the rising star about musical inspirations, debut music, future plans, and much, much more;
Growing up where did your musical inspiration come from?
I grew up with music all around me. I think the reason I am so attached to music is because I watched everyone around me use music as an outlet even just as a listener. I began to use music as my outlet not only as a listener but also as a performer.
Who are your musical icons?
I love Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Daughter… I could list so many amazing artists who influence me and my music these are just a few of who I love. Different artist inspire me in different ways.. some performance wise and others melody wise and some lyrically.
If you could collaborate with any artist who would you choose?
I would love to collaborate with so many artists but in this moment I would be very inspired and excited to work with Sia, Labrinth, or The Weeknd.
What is the main inspiration behind your debut single ‘Woosah’?
The day I came into the studio I was in the mood to write something upbeat and feel good.. and a little sassy. My co-writer (Trey Campbell) and I stared singing some melodies on top of a track by Morten Pilegaard(Pilo) and Trey mentioned the word “woosah” . After a quick reminder of what the word meant and we both felt super inspired and went with it! Everytime I walk into the studio it’s a different process and that day was a go with the flow and write how we feel.
Can fans expect to see you on tour soon?
I am really excited to perform my music and share my story in a more intimate way with my listeners.. When I have more information about my upcoming performances you will be able to find it on my social media.
Do you have any plans to release an album soon?
Early next year, I will be releasing my EP which I am beyond excited to share!
What do you hope to achieve over the next ten years?
A year from now I would like my first EP to be out. I would like to interact with my fans through performances and also more personal circumstances. In ten years I would like to have released multiple albums and be on a world tour. These are big goals I know but to be frank I just want people to enjoy my art and use it as an escape for their emotions. No one can predict the future, all I know is my future has music in it.
