Novul is a pop-alternative artist from Canada. At age 25 her music has been featured on the Billboard Dance Charts, MTV Hits and is currently in full-rotation on Canadian radio. After a small break from music, Novul will be releasing her latest upbeat track “Boys Like You”.
When you were growing up, what made you want to become a music artist?
Since a young age, I’ve always loved to entertain. I began dancing at age 3 training in ballet, tap, lyrical and hip hop. From there, it went to me stepping up and singing at my brothers hockey game at age 7. I became their Anthem singer! My mom didn’t know I could sing, but we went ahead and next thing I knew, I was singing for the NHL hockey team for up to 18,000 people. My first television live performance was at age 10 and Gloria Lorin was the host. She was blown away by my voice and told my parents that they should really pursue my singing as a career. Now remember, I’m from a small farming town and this is something you don’t hear every day haha. I’m just so lucky and blessed that my family has always been there for me. I just knew from that day forward, and getting the response I was receiving from people, I wanted to do this forever. I became known as “the little girl with the big voice.”
What was it like having your music placed on the Billboard Dance Charts?
The day I found out my single charted #16 on Billboard Dance Charts, I was freaking out!! First off, I’m independent and it was my very first single “Spark”. I was actually performing that night so it just gave me so much amp!
How do you feel when you hear your music being played on the radio?
When I hear my single being played, I just get this warm feeling inside. It’s almost like smiling from the inside out. It’s just so rewarding to me. I love knowing my hard work is paying off and that everything I’ve been through, I see my fans (Novulties) have been through too. Getting their support just validates it for me.
Where is the gig that you remember the most? And why do you remember it?
I remember the gig I did for New York Pride! It was probably 7 blocks long and full of crowds of people just jumping and singing with me. Everyone was in such a high spirit and love. I really will never forget that show.
Do you have any plans in touring in the near future?
I definitely have plans to get back performing. I was busy writing and recording, but now that I have singles coming out, I’m ready to get back on the road.
What is your new single going to be like and what vibe have you tried to create on it?
My new single, “Boys Like You”, is very groovy and I can’t wait for my fans to listen to the lyrics. I feel like everyone has been there asking “why do I?”. I can’t wait to see and hear everyone’s feedback. I was definitely very open with myself when writing these lyrics.
Out of all of your singles, which are your favourites and why?
That’s so hard for me to answer because every single is something I’ve been through. Plus, it depends on my mood or how I’m feeling. I’m really excited for “Boys Like You” though.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I see myself touring all over the world and hopefully have some Grammy’s under my belt! I would love to help with an amazing charity with children too. I love children so much and I think everyone deserves the best life. I want them to love themselves and be whoever they want to be.
