Phase Five are a five piece American based Urban/Pop band, made up of. Oden, JayC, Lee all 21, and Jermemiah and Nelson both 25.
The group are all from different places and cultures. Oden was born in Belgium, Lee is from the UK, Nelson hails from Puerto Rico, Jeremiah is from Florida and JayC was born in Canada.
I was lucky enough to catch up with the rising stars who are unsigned at the moment, to talk all things music, including Justin Bieber, and what they think of Union J and The Vamps. Plus what the future holds for Phase Five.
You come from all over the world so how did you all meet?
Jeremiah held auditions back in 2014 where he found JayC and Nelson, Odon later joined after he flew out to Los Angeles from Belgium to audition later in the year. Lee and Jeremiah met through a mutual friend and the current Phase Five line up formed in December 2014.
What made you decide to start/join a band?
We are very inspired by previous boybands such as NSYNC and Backstreet boys. And we realized that there is a huge gap in the market right now for us. However, we can all agree that having four of your brothers beside you on stage is one of the best feelings in the world
What are your earliest memories of music?
Jeremiah: I used to be a celebrity interviewer too!
Odon: I was one of the final few contestants on the Belgian version of The Voice
JayC: I love my X Box!
Nelson: I make and customize a lot of my own clothes!
Lee: I was 3 months away from graduating with a degree before I dropped everything and moved out here to join Phase Five.
Apart from music what other things do you enjoy?
We all enjoy our downtime, although we don’t get a lot of it.
We tend to spend it hanging out with friends, watching YouTube videos or TV. We also love to dance, we live in Hollywood and a lot of the best dancers and choreographers in the world are around us!
Who were your musical influences growing up?
We each have our own individual inspirations since we have all come from very different musical backgrounds. This being said, we are collectively inspired by the great world class artists and performers such as Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Justin timberland etc.
We are a boyband so we are also very inspired by the iconic NSYNC and Backstreet Boys!
Describe your sound in three words?
Catchy Urban Pop!
Who are your favourite artists/bands at the moment?
We are loving Justin Bieber’s new music! We are very excited to hear his new album (Purpose). Also Adele just released her new song ‘Hello’ which is incredible.
Who are your favourite British artists/bands?
During our visit we had a chance to hang out with The vamps. They are great guys, very talented. Also we recently came across Union J, they have amazing vocals!
Would you ever consider entering a talent show such as The X Factor?
We love X factor a lot and it has given a lot of artists incredible platforms to be able to showcase themselves. Right now, however, we are at a very good place and we can see constant progression and growth from the band . It feels great that we are doing this by ourselves and we don’t have to change ourselves to fit the mould in a show. We think as long as we continue to grow at the rate we are doing at the moment, we can achieve greatness and world domination without a show like that!
If you could collaborate with anyone who would you choose?
Janet Jackson, Chris brown, DJ mustard, and Justin Timberland. But Fifth Harmony are dope, they are definitely at the top of the list.
Would you rather win a Grammy or have a no 1 record?
I think a Grammy, to be recognized by people in the industry as influential figures, would be perfect! But we would not complain about a number 1 record either!
Who are your celebrity crushes?
The beautiful ladies of Fifth Harmony! Our fans always let us know who they would pair us up with and we love it! But Beyoncé is also up there with Tinashe
Where would be your dream venue to perform at?
Probably Wembley Stadium in the UK! After watching the Capital FM Summertime Ball, we can all say that, that is definitely the ultimate goal.
What would you like to achieve in the next ten years?
Lots of number 1 albums and several awards. We would also like to have completed numerous world tours and we would like to be recognized as one of the biggest musical acts in the world!
